Addis Ababa City Administration Education bureau, Directorate of Teachers and Educational Leadership Development provided training to teachers.

The training was given to 7th and 8th grade English and math teachers from the schools supported by the Phase 3 program for the quality of education in general.

Ms. Birhane Bekele, a teacher trainer expert and CCA training coordinator of the Addis Ababa City Administration Education Bureau, stated that the training was given to 240 teachers in order to improve the results of students based on continuous assessment.

The Addis Ababa City Administration Education Bureau’s Directorate of Interdisciplinary and Early Childhood Issues Implementation provided training on new guidelines issued to prevent gender-based violence in educational institutions.

The training was given to the gender group leaders and gender experts from selected 1st and 2nd level schools, and the program was designed to prevent and respond to sexual violence in schools and surrounding areas. They provided training based on prepared instructions.

In her message at the opening of the training, the director of the directorate of multidisciplinary and early childhood implementation of the Addis Ababa city administration education bureau, Mrs. Lynesh Yeshaw, pointed out that gender-based violence against students in schools and nearby schools has not stopped. Stating that the role of the participants in the training is very important to make the task of preventing the attack effective, the Addis Ababa Education Bureau announced that it will do the appropriate support and monitoring work to make the manual accessible to the schools.

The city-wide sports competition for teachers started today at Abebe Bikila Stadium.

This year’s competition will be held under the theme of a strong teachers’ union for peace and quality of education in our city. The competition was organized by the Addis Ababa City Administration Education Bureau in collaboration with the Addis Ababa Youth and Sports Bureau and the Addis Ababa Teachers’ Association.

The head of the Addis Ababa City Administration Education Bureau, Dr. Zelema Mulatu, said that a sports competition between teachers not only strengthens mutual acquaintance, but also allows teachers to show their potential in the types of sports they compete in. He announced that he is ready to provide the necessary assistance.

The head of the Addis Ababa Youth and Sports Bureau, Mr. Balai Dejen, pointed out that the sports office held by the education sector is one of the competitions that the office pays attention to and is one of the most important competitions in which substitute sportsmen participate.

The competition will be held for two weeks between teachers from all sub-city in football, volleyball, table tennis and chess in various sports venues for both sexes.

An evaluative supervision was conducted regarding the system in which the entire teaching and learning process is being managed in all government schools.

The supervision was conducted for three consecutive days in public schools from pre-primary level to secondary level, and the supervision was mainly intended to find out how the leadership of each school is managing the overall teaching and learning process.

The Director of General Education Supervision Directorate of Addis Ababa City Administration Education Bureau, Mr. Tsgaye Asefa, stated that orientation was given to the 2nd and 1st level cluster supervisors and office supervisors who conduct the supervision based on a checklist containing 39 points. He declared that it is to enable the management to carry out its responsibilities properly in order to improve the results and morals of students to the desired level.

Addis Ababa City Administration Education Bureau, General Education Supervision Team Leader Ms. Tigst Dinku  said  that the supervision was conducted by evaluating the teaching and learning process being given in all schools and pointed out that the schools were designed to have close and effective performance. He also explained that the supervision will help.

During their stay in each school, the participants of the supervision mentioned that most of the principals were cooperative in providing the requested information voluntarily, but in some schools, some problems were noticed from the management of information.

The Information Communication Software and Data Center team has started providing training focused on theory and practice.

The training will provide basic machine knowledge and simple maintenance. It is said that it is possible to analyze data from schools and different places and to organize various questionnaires in Google form.

The information and communication software and data center team stated that the training given to the trainees from each department in the Bureau  is mainly focused on the maintenance of simple machines and the use of basic machines.

Addis Ababa City Administration Education Bureau’s Multidisciplinary and Early Childhood Issues Implementation Directorate held a discussion with the leaders and experts of the Special Needs and Multidisciplinary Issues Group of the Regional Education Office.

The information obtained from the office shows that the discussion was mainly based on the new basic work process change and improvement study, and discussed about the activities carried out by the multi-disciplinary and early childhood affairs implementation directorate in connection with the recently implemented organization.

At the opening of the discussion, the office head of Addis Ababa City Administration Education Bureau, Mr. Sisay Disalegn, said that Addis Ababa City Administration Education Bureau needs to make education development work effective.

The Directorate of Curriculum Development and Implementation is providing training to curriculum team leaders and experts in all districts on three topics: basic work process change, new curriculum change and continuous assessment.

Director of Curriculum Enhancement and Implementation Directorate Ato Getachew Talema said that the change in the basic work process will help to overcome the gaps in the curriculum.

Regarding the increase in private schools, the Education and Training Quality Control Authority has written a letter to the private schools and informs them that it will only take action in the direction set by the authority’s office after discussion with the student’s parents’ representatives.

The Education and Training Quality Control Authority mentioned that there was a discussion on the increase in the price of private educational institutions in 2016, but due to disagreements in some educational institutions, the authority urged that it be implemented according to the circular.

A moot court was held among high school students.

The debate was jointly organized by the Addis Ababa City Administration Education Bureau with the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, and the program was attended by students, school representatives, parents, education experts and other relevant stakeholders.

Addis Ababa City Administration Education Office Civics and Ethics Curriculum Specialist Ato Gebeyehu Asfau explained that the debate was held between selected 11th grade students who had the best results in civics and ethics education from each district and announced that the debate was judged by regular court judges.

The expert pointed out that a mock trial debate between students not only enables students to raise their awareness of human rights and to be able to sue if they experience human rights violations, but also helps students to develop their ability to express their thoughts freely in front of people.

The debate was divided into 6 groups and the students who competed on behalf of Asaye School located in Kirkos Sub-city, Mikias Kebede and Fanan Siyum won and confirmed that they will represent Addis Ababa in the same competition held at the national level.
